Graham Crowley has had a long and distinguished career as a painter and teacher, won the John Moores Painting Prize in 2023 and holds strong views on what he believes painting is and should be. In this episode, he talks about his lack of cultural beginnings, his experience of conceptualism at art school and how it strengthened his belief in painting, the influence of the French painter Fernand Leger, his views on illustration, why he painted landscapes in the 1990s, how he’s attracted by luminosity in paintings, why he dislikes being called an artist, and about his prize-winning work Light Industry.

This is so refreshing, so honest and so beautifully human and insightful. A true hero of the plain speaking intellectual who cuts through so much of the art bullshit that not only have we had to endure for so many years, but has now become the norm for an art world that relies on small ideas writ large, tokenism and (of course) celebrity, driven solely by the undignified desire for commercial ‘success’.
Ridiculously articulate and passionate (not just about culture), Graham displays a clarity that is lacking in so much art ‘practice’ these days and this podcast proves that Graham is an artist (painter) who can floor the pseudo art aficionados but at the same time turn on someone who has no connection with ‘art’. No gimmicks. Just remarkable skill, both physically and intellectually.
Extraordinary work.
